After the very successful foray into mine in 2009 and in preparation for the new adventure next year not could miss to visit the Mining Museum of Massa Marittima (GR), a statement to say the least unique of its kind that literally immerses visitors in the harsh world and claustrophobic miners.
First we should point out that during the Maremma, a short distance from Grosseto metalliferous hills, where stress being " miners by 3000 years, practically since the time of the Etruscans.
In the village of Massa Marittima, well-preserved medieval jewel and must-visit, re-created to perfection of the lines of burrows, tunnels and rooms in an old mining travertine quarry, creating in practice in a manner faithful inside the mines metalliferous area, also carried vehicles, equipment and other materials from its mines now abandoned Gavorrano and fields.
The tour winds through a series of tunnels built by carpenters perpendicular to each other mines with the same techniques and the same materials used in the extraction sites.

Days prevention and self-rescue

We have just completed the second "day of practice for prevention and self-rescue in the caves and ravines," organized by the Speleological Federation of Marche with the collaboration of the CNSAS (National Corps Mountain Rescue). Among the participants, about thirty in all from different regional groups, it surely does not impress our representation, that 6 members is among the most numerous.
The choice of environment is quite apt and also the weather is on our side on Saturday, in the lobby of the Grotto of Our Lady describes techniques for self-rescue in the cave, passage of splits and knots . It 's definitely a good opportunity to review and refine those maneuvers necessary to put in a position of safety remained a victim hanging on a rope. At the end of the day, then we become really aware of how difficult even pretend to be the victim helpless and remain hanging sull'imbrago: bruising and pain around various confirm that the "position of the loin" is not the more comfortable to the human body!
The convivial atmosphere that has developed from the start, alternating with moments of seriousness to the more traditional braces goliardia caving, continues to shelter near Foss Lake: After a lecture on the prevention of accidents finally we begin to think in front of the table laid for dinner!
Perhaps the fatigue of the day, or who knows perhaps too many to drink, to 23.00 means we cooked almost every move in the dormitories, where, however, the jokes and laughter are still more or less until midnight (I almost came to tears from laughter ...).
For the second day we moved in instead of climbing Pontechiaradovo today are faced (for us it is really a refresher) techniques to secure progression in the gorge, that is, those that allow you to easily maintain releasable rope descent , and we are shown some useful maneuvers direct intervention, to be applied in case of arrest on a rope, perhaps under the waterfall.
The highlight of the afternoon is just the tutorial for the recovery of a victim stuck with the cut of his rope.
It 's a quick and relatively simple maneuver, but we also learn that should be done carefully to avoid making damage with his own blade ...
All participants at the end, I met the intense weekend, thanks again to the FSM and especially to the boys of CNSAS.
